White sage - the sacred herb of purification
Salvia apiana, known as white sage, has been surrounded by an aura of reverence and mystery for centuries. Among Native American tribes, it was (and still is) considered a sacred plant - used in rituals to purify spaces, people and objects. Its smoke had the power to ward off "bad energy" and restore harmony - both external and internal.
Botanically speaking, white sage is a perennial shrub of the pale sage family that grows naturally in the drylands of California and northern Mexico. Its leaves are thick, light green, with a silvery sheen - they contain essential oils with strong antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The plant's chemical composition includes cineol, camphor and borneol - compounds known for their aromatherapeutic and cleansing effects.
While it is much talked about today in the context of wellness, aromatherapy or yoga incense, its effects go beyond the momentary trend. White sage works on the senses, but also on space - its scent can "open the windows" in the soul and ventilate what is overdue.

How to use white sage respectfully and effectively:
Kindling:
Light the tip of the bundle with a match or natural candle. Let the leaves engulf the fire for a few seconds, then blow out the flame - the bundle should smolder slowly, emitting aromatic smoke.
Cleansing / harmonizing a space
Walk through the room with the incense in your hand, moving it in slow, circular motions. Let the smoke penetrate into corners, under the bed, behind doors - anywhere "heavy energy" may be lurking. It's a good idea to keep a window open - the smoke, along with whatever it collects, must have somewhere to escape.
Cleansing yourself
Direct the smoke toward you - start from your feet, guide it upward to the top of your head. You can use a pen, a fan or just your hand to direct the smoke. This is the ritual of returning to yourself.
Completing theritual
After use, extinguish the bundle by pressing it gently against a shell, clay saucer or sand dish.
Do not extinguish with water - let the fire go to sleep, not sink.
